"The Savior, the Gift for Us All"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
Imagine Christmas is over. The season flies by then everything goes back to "normal." Back to work. Back to school. Back to life. It's almost like Christmas didn't happen at all. But it did. And it still matters..

"Unpacking the Manger Scene"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
Today we draw all the stories and legends of Christmas together in one special moment, the Christmas Tableaux. Stories from different sources overlap here in a way that helps us visualize a mystery. Now in the week ahead we will unpack its meaning as our preparations end and the celebrating begins.

"Bearing Light"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
The birth of Jesus is truly a gift to celebrate. With Christ comes the promise of justice and righteousness that brings freedom to the captives and good news to the oppressed. We are called to not only rejoice in this hope but also to pray and act constantly for this promised reality. The birth of Jesus is truly a gift to celebrate.

"Pregnant With Possibilities"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
Today we learn that Christmas begins in the wilderness. Hope for a messiah begins with those who yearned for God to come into their lives when they faced hard times in Sinai, living in exile and suffering in poverty. Christmas still brings hope that as God entered our world in the manger of Bethlehem, so God enters into hearts today by the power of the Holy Spirit.

"Pregnant With Possibilities"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
The Christmas story is OUT OF THE BOX. Christianity never fits in a box. In a world where people feel boxed in, and boxed up, and are living inside the box, this is the ultimate good news. It's time to go outside, outside the boxes, and live in the real world: a world God loved so much God sent Jesus to be born and die in it. Today's lesson from Isaiah expresses the expectation that God can intervene and bring a better future. Mark's vision also gives us hope that all of the promises made by Jesus will come to completion.

"Life is an Investment"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
God has generously given each of us spiritual gifts, talents and opportunities for ministry. Our lessons today remind us that we should not postpone our participation in God’s plan but rather to encourage each other in living as disciples. The gospel lesson reminds us that some squander their lives without discovering the fulfillment and meaning that can be found by being followers of Jesus. There is tragedy in a wasted life. Life is an investment.

"Searching for Saints"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
All Saints’ Sunday is a day of remembrance for the saints, with the New Testament meaning of all Christian people of every time and place. We celebrate the communion of saints as we remember the dead, both of the Church universal and of our local congregation. For this reason we read the names of our congregation who have died since last All Saints’ Sunday.

"The Call for Reform"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
Today there are calls for reform around the world. On Reformation Sunday, when we celebrate sixteenth-century Reformation, we recognize that the reformers sought to bring the gospel to their time and to reverse the idolatrous trends that were at work then. Reformation Sunday commemorates Martin Luther, who nailed his 95 Theses to the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, on October 31, 1517, the eve of All Saints' Day. Different cultural idols threaten the gospel and our world today. To be true to the spirit of the Reformation, we must not simply repeat ancient confessions but also to live out our Christian principles in our daily lives.

"What Are You Doing with Your Life?"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
We are the church together. God has called all of us to serve the cause of love using our gifts and abilities. Together we have the resources to transform our world with the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit. The author of 1 Peter challenges us to quit living selfishly and to begin to live for God’s purpose. Jesus surprises his audience by praising an outcast who respond shows compassion for his enemy. Are you living intentionally or simply reacting to the events around you? The challenge is to open our lives to the direction of the Holy Spirit.

"An Invitation to Joy"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
Our teachers, preachers, Christian family and friends encourage us to put our faith into action. The author of Philippians reminds us to keep on doing the things we have learned from Christian influences. Jesus’ parable presents a series of invitations and responses to live in the new kingdom of love. We are called to put on the garments of faith and to come rejoicing and worshiping our God. God invites you to enter into worship today. Rejoice!

"A World in Communion"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
What it means to uphold the law of God is the focus of today’s readings. From the time that the Lord’s commandments are given to Moses and the people of Israel, the law is both a blessing to those who understand its message and a curse to those who can read it only as a set of rigid, unbending rules. Jesus makes it quite clear that the kingdom of heaven belongs to those who understand God’s word to be the love story of the Creator for all of creation. On this World Communion Sunday we celebrate that God’s call is to all creation. .

"Stumbling Blocks or Stepping Stones?"
Rev. Deborah Ackley-Killian, guest pastor
Moses led his people through challenging times of rapid change and shortages. They found it challenging to have faith even when God provided miraculously for their needs. Jesus also found his followers unwilling to follow obediently, but Jesus reminds them that all who follow the commandment to love God and others will be welcome in the Kingdom of God. Are we willing to follow God into the future by following the guidelines of love and forgiveness demonstrated by the life and teachings of Jesus? .

Rev. Oden R. Warman
Today we come to this holy place in celebration of God's gift of life. Of all life — but especially the gift of a long, fruitful life. We honor our members of 50 years, who bring wisdom, experience, and love to our family. With them we renew our vows to Christ and to his church. .

"Between Memory and Hope"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
On September 11, 2001, our lives and world were changed. In tragic and shocking ways, we suffered attacks on innocent people. Men, women, and children can recall when and where they first learned of these events and the meaning they would have individually and for our world. Those too young to recall firsthand have still experienced the images and emotions. Today we remember the ways our senses and our souls were affected that day. We confess our own brokenness and the brokenness of our world in the aftermath of these attacks. We are comforted and challenged by holy scripture and the Holy Spirit as we seek to respond as disciples of Jesus Christ.

"Love's Labor"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
In Romans, Paul speaks about the commandment to love as a fulfillment of the law. In John, Jesus shows us how love deals with conflict in our community. In the Kingdom of God all are called to serve using the gifts God has given us. Labor can be an expression of God’s love and offers meaning and purpose to life.

"Yearning for Freedom"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
Our theme today is the pursuit of freedom, both political and spiritual. God calls Moses to rise beyond his limitations to lead his people out from under the power of an Egyptian tyrant. Jesus reminds us of one of the greatest, and most difficult, paradoxes of Christianity: to save your life you must first lose it. The Bible reminds us that people are to be free. As people around the world yearn to be free from tyrants and from bondage to sin and inner demons, God calls us to a new kingdom through Jesus that offers liberation.

"Choosing to Follow"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
In Matthew, Peter names Jesus as the Christ, the anointed one, and a new community, the church, begins to take root. Paul names the differing gifts that strengthen the body of Christ for the mission of Christ. The church has continued because people ever since, all around the globe, have discovered that God reveals himself in the Jesus of history and the Christ that is present through the Holy Spirit. How has your life been changed by knowing Christ? Are you open to following as well as believing?

"Hang in There!"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
What unites us is far greater than what divides us. Joseph forgives his brothers for selling him into slavery. His family and all of Egypt face a famine. God used the events of Joseph’s difficult life to save Israelites and Egyptians alike from famine. In Jesus’ day the leaders
had no clue how to rescue their society and there were strong divisions between groups, but Jesus demonstrates that the kingdom can include those usually ignored. Faith brings healing and joy.

"Healing by Struggling"
Rev. Dr. John D. Miller, guest pastor
Seeing God face to face is a theme that runs through today readings. Experiencing God can bring both joy and fear. After Jacob wrestles all night, he realizes he has seen God face to face and survived. The experience leaves him injured and limping. For the disciples, seeing God’s miraculous power in Jesus brings both confusion and joy. The disciples witness loaves and fish transformed into an abundant feast for all. Whether we wrestle and struggle, or experience an unexpected miracle, we too can find ourselves with a new start as morning dawns and God’s amazing presence is revealed.

Dr. Eric S. Park, guest speaker
Peter's vision of the kingdom of God that is inaugurated through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus maintains that no one can be defined as untouchable.

"Climbing the Ladder"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
God is with us. Jacob dreams of angels and recognizes that God has been present with him in his family struggles. God’s whole creation groans with the pangs of giving birth to the plan of redemption. The text reminds us of God’s promises. God is with us. With God, we are creating and being created even as we wait for the fulfillment of God’s promises.

"A Lesson from the Garden"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
God's guidance and direction comes to us in the middle of our complicated lives. Sometimes we are receptive to the call of God and at other times the struggle and challenges of life distract us from hearing God's direction. Through the parable of the sower and the different soils Jesus reminds us that people respond to the good news of God's love in different ways. How can we open our hearts to the call of Christ and share that life-changing word with others?

"Freed by Our Faith"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
In its simplest terms, the struggle of human history has been the struggle for freedom and peace of mind. Today our Lord reminds us that if we follow him we can find true freedom and peace. As we celebrate political freedom as a nation we are reminded that it must be combined with a friendship with Christ if we are to experience the abundant life God intended for us all.

"Beyond Togetherness"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
God in Christ has brought us together into the intimate unity of the family of God — our adoption as children of God. Unity is something we do not have to create. We need to discover the unity that Christ has already created. Once we realize our common heritage as children of God we can stand with one another and work together to bring people to Christ and to become an answer to prayer for those who cry out to God for help. We have lived this truth in our merger of the Brookline and Mt. Lebanon congregations.

"The Love of Father"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
We understand God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Today we focus on fatherhood. God bless those fathers who are effectively raising their children, and those fathers who have not just shown duty, but love. To touch the future beyond your own life, be a loving nurturing adult for a child. Be connected to your God, your family and to your church.

"Excited, Motivated, Changed"
Rev. Oden R. Warman
The Day of Pentecost concludes the Great Fifty Days of Easter. The color red today catches the color of the "tongues of flame" that appeared among the disciples at Pentecost, fifty days after the Passover. Pentecost is the anniversary of God sending his Holy Spirit upon all who need it to bring them into fellowship with God. It is the birthday of the church. It is the Spirit that has inspired and sustained the people of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church for 100 years.
