Obituary

Edmund M. Clarke, 75, of Mt. Lebanon passed away on December 22 at Asbury Heights from Covid-19.  He married his high school sweetheart, Martha W. Clarke in 1968.  His last words to her were “I love you.”  He was extremely proud of his three sons:  Dr. James S. Clarke (wife, Lori) of Portland, OR; Dr. Jonathan E. Clarke (wife, Katie) of Decatur, GA; Dr. Jeffrey M. Clarke, MD (wife Shannon) of Durham, NC.  He adored his grandchildren: Theo and Alex, Andrew and Emily, Harrison and Elliott.  He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Clarke Verdirame (husband, Joe) of Suffolk, VA and several cousins, his niece and two nephews.  He is predeceased by his parents Edmund and Evelyn Clarke of Smithfield, VA.

While Ed was well known in the computer science field, he was Dad at home.  He instilled in each of his sons the joy of learning.  He enjoyed helping them with science projects and was always encouraging them to take more math classes.  He loved books, fishing, movies, building models, long walks, and flying kites.  His love of family grew with the addition of grandchildren, who affectionately called him Granddaddy.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Laughlin Funeral Home in Mt. Lebanon.  Because of Covid-19 restrictions the memorial service is private and will be live-streamed on December 28 at 2:00 at www.mlumc.org.   Select News, and then the memorial service link.  A recording of the service will also be available at the same link.

If you would like to remember Ed, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the MLUMC Food Pantry, 3319 W. Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15216, or to the Clarke Endowed Graduate Fellowship in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.
