Faith For today

Faith For Today is our joint Summer Sunday School for adults. It is a speaker-based class with presentations on a new topic each week. This year, Faith for Today will take place at 9:30AM from June 7th until August 30th. You can learn more about each week's topic below.

  • June 7th - Healthcare for Underserved Populations

    Mary Herbert, the practice manager for Birmingham Free Clinic in Pittsburgh, will give insight into how current policies are affecting health care for uninsured populations.

  • June 14th - Celebrating 250 Years: Methodism as the Quintessential American Denomination

    250 years ago, our ancestors set about on a new political experiment as they declared their independence from Britain. This talk will explore how the political, cultural and geographic conditions in the Americas also encouraged the growth and development of the Methodist church into a new American denomination.

  • June 28th - Temperance

    Methodist temperance societies were grassroots movements within Methodism dedicated to reducing or eliminating the use of alcohol, especially during the 19th and early 20th centuries. They combined spiritual discipline, social reform, and community accountability, and became a major force in the broader temperance movement in the United States and Britain.

  • July 5th - Human Sexuality & Gender Identity

    The Social Principles Team will lead a discussion on LGBTQ issues and the church, including personal stories.

  • July 12th - Uncommon Women

    Since our country’s birth 250 years ago until the present time, there have been “uncommon” Methodist women who have answered God’s Call in unique and extraordinary ways.

  • July 19th - Current Immigration Issues

    Sister Janice Vanderneck, the founder of Casa San Jose, will update us on current immigration issues in the US and locally. 

  • July 26th - 250 Years of Religious Freedom

    The history of religious freedom in our nation is not perfect but ultimately is inspiring. We will look at the story of religion in the colonies as well as our 250 years as a nation...warts and all!

  • August 2nd - Backpack Mission Project

    This hands-on program will include packing school supplies for MLUMC food pantry clients and others in our community. 

  • August 9th - Difficulty with Standing

    Our United Methodist history includes some dark periods, such as denominational decisions and splits due to racism. Dr. Aupperle will discuss a few  of these pivotal moments, and how we can continue to take a stand for racial justice today. 

  • August 16th - Joyful Noise Music Program

    MLUMC members and friends will share their music talents!

  • August 23rd - The Role of Methodism in Early U.S. History

    Retired UMC Clergy & Former Adjunct Faculty Member at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary will discuss the growth and impact of the Methodist movement during the early history of the United States. 

  • August 30th - Youth Mission Trip Report

    MLUMC youth will share their experiences on the summer mission trip to Project Crossroads in Marion, VA.
